Connecticut allocates funds to assist residents affected by federal immigration changes

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced a $5 million funding proposal to support residents impacted by shifts in federal immigration policies. The funds, drawn from the Federal Cuts Response Fund, are intended to assist individuals whose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has been affected, including immigrants from Haiti, Syria, and other nations.

The resources will be administered by the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) to help families maintain stability regarding housing, food access, and essential services. The initiative aims to provide guidance to residents facing uncertainty over their legal status and work authorizations.

In Danbury, Mayor Roberto Alves reported that fear of federal immigration raids is significantly impacting community life, noting that children are missing school and residents are avoiding public activities. Alves estimated that between 70 and 100 people may have been detained during a single critical week, though official federal figures were not provided.
