Connecticut floods of 1955 devastate Winsted and Naugatuck Valley

Historian Hamish Lutris recently presented on the devastating 1955 floods in Connecticut, an event described as a defining moment in the post-World War II history of Winsted. The flooding was caused by a succession of two hurricanes, Connie and Diane, which dropped a total of 35 inches of rain on the region.

In Winsted, the impact was severe, with 170 of the 200 businesses on Main Street destroyed. Damage in the town alone was estimated at over $27 million in 1955 dollars. The floods claimed seven lives in Winsted and contributed to a statewide death toll estimated between 87 and 90 people.

Across Connecticut, the total property damage was estimated to exceed $200 million. The disaster significantly altered the landscape of the Naugatuck River Valley and remains a major historical touchstone for the affected communities.
