Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont addresses state taxes and housing legislation
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has addressed both fiscal and housing issues facing the state. Regarding taxation, Lamont stated he does not see a need to raise taxes, citing income-tax reductions, a budget surplus, and debt payments. However, a review by the Yankee Institute highlighted the state's extensive revenue collection, noting that Connecticut's fiscal year 2025 revenue included approximately $30.4 billion from 370 different sources, including 56 taxes, 211 fees, and 15 fines.
On the issue of housing, Lamont praised recent sweeping legislation designed to address the state's affordability crisis. The law, which follows a previous version he vetoed due to lack of local buy-in, requires towns to create housing growth plans and eliminates most off-street parking requirements for small developments. The legislation also expands fair rent commissions and bans ‘hostile architecture’ intended to prevent people experiencing homelessness from lying down.
