Connecticut municipalities implement bans on data center development
Several municipalities across Connecticut are taking preemptive action to block the development of data centers through bans and moratoriums. This trend of political pushback is occurring ahead of actual development proposals, a phenomenon noted as unusual by experts.
In East Lyme, the Zoning Commission unanimously adopted an indefinite ban on all data center development to address concerns regarding energy consumption, pollution, and chemical runoff. Other local governments have also taken action, including New Haven, which passed a one-year moratorium with an exemption for its existing quantum computing hub, and the town of Morris, which implemented a two-year ban.
