Connecticut officials address reports of federal voter fraud investigation

Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas held a press conference to address reports of a planned Department of Homeland Security (DHS) surge investigation into voter fraud. According to reports from CNN, Connecticut is one of nine states where federal investigators may pursue leads, conduct interviews, and refer cases for prosecution regarding noncitizens who may have registered or voted illegally.

Thomas stated that her office has not been contacted by DHS regarding any intent to investigate in the state, nor have local registrars or town clerks reported any such activity. While she noted that investigating election law violations is standard practice if misconduct is suspected, she expressed concern that reports of investigations so close to the November 3 election could have a chilling effect on voter participation.

A spokesperson for DHS declined to confirm the specific investigation but stated that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is actively working to root out election fraud and that finding noncitizens on voter rolls remains a priority for the agency.
