Connecticut politics: AFL-CIO endorses Lamont as state approves electric bill relief

The Connecticut AFL-CIO has endorsed Governor Ned Lamont for a third term, presenting a legislative agenda focused on annual omnibus labor bills, relaxed fiscal guardrails, and strong state employee contracts. AFL-CIO President Ed Hawthorne noted a shift in the Governor’s approach, contrasting his first term’s support for minimum wage increases with his second term’s veto of a bill allowing striking workers to collect unemployment benefits.

In related state developments, the State Bond Commission approved borrowing up to $145 million to lower electric bills by addressing unpaid costs accumulated during the pandemic and funding electric vehicle charging programs. Additionally, campaign finance reports show Governor Lamont spent nearly $10.5 million during the Democratic primary, with $10.2 million provided through self-funding.

Separately, Central Connecticut State University President Zulma Toro is facing an investigation following a complaint alleging intimidation and bullying of staff during an August retreat.
