Connecticut towns deploy AI cameras on school buses

Several Connecticut communities, including New Haven, Bridgeport, and Vernon, have partnered with BusPatrol to install AI-powered cameras on school buses. The technology is intended to identify drivers who illegally pass buses while their warning lights are flashing and stop arms are extended.

In New Haven, cameras installed on more than 300 buses have recorded approximately 12,000 incidents. In Vernon, nearly 100 drivers were caught within the first three days of the program's rollout. State law permits the use of this video evidence to impose fines, with first-time violations carrying a $250 penalty.

The initiative follows safety concerns from the Connecticut Department of Transportation, which reported 12 deaths and 23 serious injuries involving school buses over the last six years.
