Connectivity Standards Alliance launches Aliro smart lock standard
The Connectivity Standards Alliance has launched Aliro 1.0, a new communication protocol and credential standard designed to streamline smart lock access. The standard aims to reduce the friction caused by fragmented ecosystems by allowing compatible doors to be unlocked via digital credentials stored in major mobile wallets.
Aliro is designed to function across Apple, Google, and Samsung ecosystems, preventing property owners from being tied to a single handset brand. The protocol utilizes three wireless technologies: NFC for tap-to-unlock access, Bluetooth Low Energy for longer-range communication, and a combination of Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband to enable hands-free entry by detecting an authorized device's approach.
For property developers and landlords, the standard offers a cross-platform solution for managing access to residential schemes, student accommodations, and offices. It separates the access credential from proprietary lock applications, allowing residents to use existing mobile wallets while owners select hardware from various certified vendors.
