Connor Hellebuyck's suspension to end amid Winnipeg Jets trade standoff

The disciplinary suspension of Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is expected to end on Friday, October 23. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner has been absent since training camp following a summer trade request. Although Hellebuyck reportedly informed the organization of his intent to return on October 2, the Jets utilized a clause in the Collective Bargaining Agreement to issue a suspension of “reasonable length” for his unauthorized absence.

By the time the suspension expires, Hellebuyck is projected to have forfeited nearly $1 million in salary. While the expiration of the penalty allows him to rejoin the active roster, his future with the franchise remains uncertain. Reports suggest that a trade may be the only way to resolve the standoff, as neither the player nor the organization appears eager for his immediate return to the lineup.

Potential trade suitors include the Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and Carolina Hurricanes. While the Kings have reportedly shown interest, Hellebuyck is believed to be wary of playing for Canadian teams, which complicates potential deals involving the Edmonton Oilers. Jets captain Adam Lowry noted that while Hellebuyck is a friend, his return would necessitate “serious conversations” to address the ongoing tension.
