Connor McDavid addresses leadership role under new coach Mike Babcock

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has addressed concerns regarding the team’s new head coach, Mike Babcock, stating that the player leadership group is prepared to “step in” if Babcock crosses professional lines. The comments come as Babcock begins his first training camp with the Oilers following a controversial career that included an NHL investigation and a brief, unsuccessful tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

McDavid emphasized that while the team respects Babcock’s right to coach as he sees fit, the players maintain a commitment to looking out for one another. “If there’s an area or a place where we have to step in, of course we’re going to do that,” McDavid said, noting that such an intervention would be standard for any coach.

Babcock’s hiring has drawn criticism from former players, including Mike Commodore. Commodore publicly criticized the appointment on social media, referencing past grievances regarding Babcock’s management style during their time with the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings.
