Connor McDavid reacts to rising NHL player salaries

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has commented on the rapid escalation of NHL salaries, noting that several players are set to earn more than his own $12.5 million annual average value (AAV). During the NHL’s annual Player Media Tour, McDavid stated that the record-breaking paydays are “deservedly so” and viewed the trend as a positive development for player leverage and ownership regarding contract terms and team destinations.

Recent high-value extensions include Cale Makar’s eight-year deal at $20.4 million per season and Macklin Celebrini’s five-year contract at $18.8 million. Other players, such as Leo Carlsson and Connor Bedard, have also secured significant contracts. McDavid noted that while team ownership may hold different perspectives, the ability for players to push for higher compensation and greater influence is a beneficial shift for the league.

McDavid also addressed the trend of American players seeking trades from Canadian teams, a development occurring amidst a long-standing Stanley Cup drought for Canadian franchises.
