Connor Watson ruled out of NRL Grand Final due to concussion protocols
Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson will miss the NRL grand final against Newcastle due to mandatory concussion protocols. Watson suffered a head knock during the preliminary final win over the Dolphins, and his symptoms were upgraded from category two to category one, triggering a required 11-day stand-down period.
The ruling prevents Watson from making a farewell appearance for the Roosters before he joins the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2027. While the club had the option to seek a reclassification or exemption through independent medical advice, they ultimately opted not to do so.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson expressed support for the protocols, noting they exist to protect player health. Despite the impact on Watson, Robinson stated he does not support changing the schedule to include a week off before the grand final, arguing that momentum and attrition are inherent parts of the game.
