Conor Benn discusses his father Nigel Benn’s boxing legacy
Conor Benn has revealed that he did not realize the full extent of his father Nigel Benn’s legendary boxing career until he was 16 years old. Speaking with Daniel Cormier ahead of his WBC welterweight title fight against Ryan Garcia, Benn explained that his religious upbringing and his father’s decision to sell championship belts to charity kept his professional accolades largely absent from their home life.
Benn noted that boxing was rarely discussed in his household, stating, “All I see is Dad.” His interest in the sport was sparked after witnessing the public reception his father received during a question-and-answer appearance in London.
The discussion also touched upon the complexities of second-generation boxers. While some athletes benefit from family legacies, the physical and mental demands of the sport often lead successful fighters to discourage their children from pursuing professional boxing due to its inherent dangers.
