Conor McGregor's ACL Injury Triggers Debate Over UFC Return Strategy

Conor McGregor suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in the first minute of his UFC 329 comeback bout against Max Holloway at the T‑Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was stopped after 69 seconds, awarding Holloway a TKO win.

Paul Felder said McGregor faces a "much trickier road to recovery" because of his age (38) and previous injuries, noting that the fighter is unlikely to return quickly despite advances in regenerative medicine. Felder also reminded that McGregor has not won a fight since January 2020 and still has one fight left on his UFC contract.

Former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling argued that McGregor should have been re‑booked against Michael Chandler, the opponent originally slated for UFC 303, rather than being thrown into a fight with a top‑ranked opponent immediately upon return. Sterling believes a Chandler matchup would have better restored the Irishman's confidence and offered a less hazardous test.
