University of Pisa and CONOU partner to research PFAS contamination
The National Consortium of Used Mineral Oils (CONOU) and the University of Pisa’s Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction (Destec) have launched a collaborative initiative to address the environmental and health risks of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).
The partnership aims to enhance research, monitoring, and management of these persistent synthetic chemicals, which are widely used in products ranging from packaging and medicines to firefighting foams and cosmetics. The initiative seeks to provide evidence-based responses to help citizens and institutions manage the risks associated with these substances.
In Tuscany, the urgency of this research is highlighted by data from Arpat, which reported measurable PFAS residues in 95% of monitored surface water stations and 73% of groundwater stations. Additionally, 48% of monitored surface water stations exceeded environmental quality standards. The Tuscany Region has initiated investigations to map contamination sources within industrial discharges and emissions.
