Consensys founder confirms MetaMask wallets safe after security incident

Consensys founder Joseph Lubin has stated that there is no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds were affected by a recent security incident involving part of the company’s infrastructure. Lubin emphasized that because MetaMask operates on a self-custody model, users maintain control of their own private keys and Secret Recovery Phrases, which were not part of the incident.

As a precautionary measure, Consensys and its partners rotated validator keys. This process required some Ethereum staking machines to be shut down. While the rotation protects assets, it necessitates that validators exit the staking queue and rejoin, a process that can be time-consuming. MetaMask validators have begun an exit process expected to conclude by October 7, with ETH withdrawals potentially taking approximately 45 days to complete.
