Conservation and agriculture initiatives reported in Acre and Roraima

In the state of Acre, rural worker Francisco Tiago Silva de Souza has spent nearly 20 years operating a voluntary ‘nursery’ to protect tracajá turtles. Since 2007, de Souza has been collecting eggs from riverbanks in Santa Rosa do Purus to prevent them from being consumed by humans, which had previously threatened the species' reproduction. He monitors the eggs until they hatch and then releases the hatchlings back into the Purus River. Last year, approximately 350 turtles were released, and about 200 have been released so far this year.

In Roraima, indigenous communities in Boa Vista have begun harvesting corn. Supported by local government initiatives for soil preparation and input distribution, 102 hectares of corn were planted this year. The Serra do Truaru community recently completed the harvest of 8 hectares, marking a significant step in local agricultural production and food security for indigenous farmers.
