Conservation efforts launch black vulture reintroduction in Andalusia

The Sociedad Gaditana de Historia Natural, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucía and several partner organizations, has begun the reintroduction of the black vulture (Aegypius monachus) in the province of Cádiz. This marks the return of the species to the region after it had been extinct as a breeding species there for over a century due to habitat loss, poisoning, and direct persecution.

The first seven adapted specimens were released in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. The project aims to utilize the healthy ecosystems and abundant food availability in areas like Los Alcornocales and Sierra de Grazalema to establish a stable population. Success in this initiative is expected to bolster the conservation of other threatened species, such as the Egyptian vulture, and may pave the way for the future reintroduction of the bearded vulture.
