Conservation initiatives expand in Neuquén and Río Negro

Authorities in Argentina are implementing new measures to protect natural resources and biodiversity in the Neuquén and Río Negro provinces.

In Neuquén, the Provincial Directorate of Fauna and Protected Natural Areas is modernizing fishing controls and wildlife protection. The province has integrated 26 drones, including five autonomous models, and a monitoring center equipped with over 170 cameras. Additionally, two underwater drones are expected to assist in detecting illegal nets in lakes. These technological upgrades, alongside a renewed vehicle fleet, aim to combat illegal practices and support the work of 96 operational park rangers.

In Río Negro, the legislature has unanimously approved the creation of the Corredor de los 5 Grandes Natural Protected Area. This initiative, supported by Governor Alberto Weretilneck, establishes the largest marine protected area in the province, covering 2,730 square kilometers and more than 130 kilometers of coastline. The corridor connects existing protected areas and incorporates sectors of the Río Negro estuary to protect emblematic species such as orcas, sharks, dolphins, whales, and sea lions.
