Conservation initiatives promote biodiversity in Germany

Conservation organizations in Germany are highlighting the importance of biodiversity through various initiatives. The Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz (LBV) is advocating for more nature-oriented cemetery designs. The organization warns against the trend of using gravel and sealed surfaces for graves, which deprives insects and birds of food and nesting sites. Instead, the LBV recommends using native plants and maintaining open soil to support species such as owls, woodpeckers, and hedgehogs.

Simultaneously, the Affen- und Vogelpark Eckenhagen has launched species protection action days in September. Organized in conjunction with the Landeszooverband NRW's month of species protection, the event aims to sensitize the public to the importance of biodiversity. The park, which houses approximately 1,000 animals across 120 species—50 percent of which are endangered—is using these educational weekends to engage visitors of all ages.
