Conservationists urge replacing leaf blowers with rakes
Nature conservation organizations in Germany are advising gardeners and municipalities to replace leaf blowers with rakes and brooms to protect both wildlife and human health.
Biologist Angelika Nelson of the Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz (LBV) stated that leaf blowers destroy habitats and food sources for birds, hedgehogs, insects, and other small animals. The Bund Naturschutz (BN) has called on municipalities to minimize the use of leaf blowers in parks and green spaces, suggesting they be restricted to streets and paths, while advocating for a total ban on private use.
Experts note that fallen leaves serve as natural fertilizer, as organisms like earthworms and mites convert plant remains into nutrient-rich humus. Leaving leaves in garden beds or in piles provides essential winter shelter for various species. Furthermore, leaf blowers can negatively impact human health by stirring up dust, pollen, and mold spores.
