Conservative MP introduces bill to end welfare recognition for polygamous marriages

Conservative MP Richard Holden is introducing the Social Security (Marriage) Bill to end the recognition of polygamous and incestuous marriages within the UK welfare system. The proposed private members’ bill aims to close a loophole where marriages contracted overseas are recognized for benefit purposes, specifically regarding Pension Credit and Housing Benefit.

Supported by Kemi Badenoch and several other shadow cabinet members, the legislation seeks to ensure that additional-spouse provisions are removed across the social security system. The bill also intends to explicitly prohibit the recognition of overseas marriages between close relatives, such as those between an aunt and nephew or an uncle and niece, for welfare purposes.

Richard Holden stated that families struggling with the cost of living should not fund payments for additional spouses in polygamous arrangements. The bill will be introduced through the 10-minute rule procedure in the House of Commons.
