Conservative Party proposes prioritizing cheap energy over net zero targets

The Conservative Party is signaling a strategic shift in UK energy policy by prioritizing electricity affordability over the 2050 net zero target. This pivot is supported by a report from the think tank Onward, which suggests that abandoning net zero regulations could save households approximately £540 annually by 2030.

The proposed approach emphasizes a mix of gas and nuclear energy while reducing reliance on renewables to lower network costs. Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho is expected to argue that the current drive toward a carbon-free grid imposes excessive costs on ordinary families and risks driving industry to more polluting countries. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has characterized the 2050 target as impossible to meet.

While the plan aims to reduce costs, the Onward analysis notes that 524 million tonnes of carbon emissions would still be produced by 2050 under this pathway. Additionally, the report highlights potential volatility, estimating that gas price spikes could add £6bn to fuel costs by 2040. The Labour Party has criticized the proposal, arguing it ties the United Kingdom to fossil fuels.
