Conservative Party proposes social housing restrictions for migrants in the UK

The Conservative Party has proposed a plan to restrict access to social housing for foreign nationals, including those with refugee status, humanitarian protection, or indefinite leave to remain. The proposal aims to free up approximately 228,000 to 230,000 homes for British families. Under the plan, existing migrant tenants could face eviction with six months' notice.

Advocacy groups, including Southall Black Sisters, have criticized the policy as "cruel, divisive, and dangerous," arguing it specifically threatens the safety of migrant women fleeing domestic abuse. Critics contend that the policy scapegoats migrants for a chronic housing shortage and creates a "two-tier system" based on nationality.

Refugees, such as Yuliana Zaichenko, a Ukrainian national living in London, have described the plan as "devastating," suggesting that politicians are using foreign nationals as a "common enemy" to appeal to voters. Opponents argue that the housing crisis should be addressed by increasing investment and building more social homes rather than removing existing tenants.
