Conservative Party vows to protect UK unity against independence movements

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has stated that her party is fighting to keep the United Kingdom united, vowing to prevent the first ministers of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland from “ripping the United Kingdom apart.” This comes following a meeting of devolved government leaders in Wales where they suggested that the influence of Westminster is declining.

In response to discussions regarding the UK’s relationship with the European Union, Justice Secretary Alex Norris clarified that the government is not considering a second Scottish independence referendum. While some political figures have suggested re-evaluating the UK’s membership in the EU, Norris stated he would not link the debate over EU engagement to the question of the Union, noting that the government remains committed to safeguarding it.

Shadow officials also criticized independence movements, with the shadow Scotland secretary accusing the SNP of using independence as a distraction from economic issues such as high taxation and business closures.
