Conservatives vow to override SNP ban on nuclear power in Scotland
Shadow energy secretary Andrew Bowie has announced that a future Conservative government would introduce legislation to override the Scottish National Party (SNP) ban on new nuclear power. The proposal aims to ensure that no part of Great Britain is excluded from nuclear renewal plans, specifically targeting the SNP's current opposition to hosting small modular reactors in Scotland.
Bowie criticized the SNP's stance as a “luddite approach” that threatens energy security and job creation within Scotland's nuclear industry. While the current UK Labour government has expressed interest in hosting small modular reactors in Scotland, the SNP holds planning powers that have effectively blocked such developments.
Critics of the nuclear expansion plan have raised concerns regarding the vulnerability of large power stations to missile strikes, suggesting that centralized nuclear plants could leave regions without power for extended periods if attacked. Alternative suggestions include investing in tidal power and smaller, more distributed energy sources to increase resilience.
