Sugar industry reports record harvests and new regulations in Latin America

The sugar industry is seeing significant activity across several regions. In the Dominican Republic, the Consorcio Azucarero Central (CAC) achieved a record harvest for the 2025-2026 season, processing 748,000 tons of cane to produce 81,124 tons of cream sugar. This growth is attributed to investments in mechanized cutting, drip irrigation, and crop renewal. The CAC remains a major employer in the southern region, supporting over 3,200 workers.

In Argentina, the sugar harvest in the provinces of Tucumán, Salta, and Jujuy has surpassed 15 million tons of milled cane. Data from the Instituto de Promoción del Azúcar y Alcohol de Tucumán (IPAAT) indicates rising yields, with Tucumán alone accounting for over 10.5 million tons. The region also shows strong production in bioethanol for fuel blending.

In El Salvador, the Legislative Assembly approved a new contribution mechanism for the 2026/2027 harvest. Sugar cane producers and mills will pay a specific fee per pound of sugar extracted to fund the operations and investments of the Consejo Salvadoreño de la Agroindustria Azucarera (CONSAA).
