Consorzio Universitario di Siracusa faces economic crisis and operational suspension
The Consorzio Universitario di Siracusa (CUSIR) is facing a severe economic crisis, resulting in the suspension of activities and the closure of its operational headquarters in via Agati. Workers at the consortium have reportedly gone months without pay.
Sicilian Regional Councilor for Education and Vocational Training, Mimmo Turano, issued a statement detailing efforts to stabilize the institution. He noted that the Sicilian Region has worked to unblock 2022 contributions, appoint a regional representative to the presidency, and resolve legal disputes with the University of Messina. These actions aimed to facilitate the accreditation of the Syracuse site and the transfer of degree courses to the city.
The University of Messina has expressed solidarity with the unpaid workers but clarified that the staff are employees of the Consortium, not the University. Rector Giovanna Spatari stated that the university's priority is protecting students by ensuring educational continuity, potentially through online learning, while maintaining administrative and accounting regulations. The University of Messina indicated it is prepared to seek alternative solutions with other institutional actors if the Consortium cannot guarantee services.
