Romania faces severe flooding and extreme weather

Romania is experiencing extreme weather conditions, with heavy rainfall and flooding risks across several regions. The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) has issued a red hydrological alert for rivers in eastern Constanța County, specifically south of the Danube-Black Sea Canal, warning of rapid flash floods and rising water levels in the Tatlageacul Mare and Tatlageacul Mic basins.

In the coastal areas of Constanța, including Mangalia, Limanu, and 23 August, meteorologists recorded significant precipitation, with Mangalia reaching 106.4 liters per square meter within 24 hours. This prompted red weather alerts and RO-Alert messages to residents. Other parts of southern Romania, including the Dobrogea region and several river basins such as Olt, Argeș, and Prahova, remain under orange or yellow alerts due to the threat of flooding and heavy rain.

In addition to the flooding, extreme weather has impacted other sectors. A water pipe failure in the Rompetrol area of Năvodari caused water supply disruptions in Năvodari, Corbu, and the Midia Industrial Zone. In the Prahova mountains, heavy snow reaching 40 centimeters has led to the closure of high-altitude hiking trails due to dangerous conditions.
