Constantin Brâncoveanu and the legacy of the Brâncovenii martyrs

Constantin Brâncoveanu, who ruled Wallachia from 1688 to 1714, was executed in Constantinople on August 15, 1714, alongside his four sons—Constantin, Ștefan, Radu, and Matei—and his advisor Ianache Văcărescu.

Brâncoveanu’s reign was characterized by economic and cultural progress, modernization of the state apparatus, and fiscal reforms. His era introduced Western influences that blended with Eastern traditions, creating a unique national synthesis. Born in 1564 in Brâncoveni, he received an elite education in Greek, Latin, Slavonic, Turkish, and Romanian.

The Romanian Orthodox Church canonized Brâncoveanu and his sons as the Holy Martyrs Brâncoveni in 1992. Their feast day is observed on August 16 to avoid coinciding with the Dormition of the Mother of God.
