Constitution Day observations highlight legal reforms and civic engagement
Constitution Day, observed on September 17, serves as a reminder of the 1787 signing of the U.S. Constitution. Discussions surrounding the day highlight the need to bridge the gap between constitutional promises and daily reality, particularly within the criminal justice system.
Key areas for reform include reigning in the federal criminal code. While criminal law was largely intended for the states, Congress has enacted over 5,000 federal statutes, and agencies have added approximately 300,000 regulatory offenses. Additionally, there are calls to restore the right to a jury trial, as the vast majority of federal and state convictions now occur through guilty pleas rather than trials.
In recognition of the day, Youngstown State University’s Student Government Association hosted a candidate forum. The event featured nearly 20 local candidates from both Democratic and Republican parties, aiming to educate students and young voters on the platforms of those running for office.
