Albanian judiciary faces crisis over unpaid salaries

The Albanian judicial system is facing a significant crisis due to the non-payment of salaries for judges and judicial administration staff. The Constitutional Court has issued a statement clarifying that its decision from February 17, 2026, regarding salary standards is final and binding, regardless of internal budget administration methods.

In response to the situation, Sokol Sadushi, Chairman of the Supreme Court, has called for a General Assembly of Judges on September 10 to determine institutional steps. Simultaneously, court presidents have demanded the immediate unblocking of funds, noting that unpaid wages threaten judicial independence and the normal functioning of courts.

The crisis has led to direct action, including a work boycott by employees of the Tirana Court's Civil Chamber. Meanwhile, the General Prosecutor's Office has met with prosecutors and judicial council representatives, agreeing to address the matter through legal instruments to ensure institutional stability.
