Constitutional Court president targets year-end resolution for Puigdemont amnesty appeal

Cándido Conde-Pumpido, president of Spain’s Constitutional Court, indicated that the court's ruling on Carles Puigdemont’s appeal regarding the amnesty law could be resolved before the end of the year.

The court is scheduled to begin deliberations on September 22 regarding appeals filed following the Court of Justice of the European Union's endorsement of the amnesty law. The process will begin with the appeal from Junts Secretary General Jordi Turull. Following this, the court will address appeals from individuals previously convicted, such as ERC leader Oriol Junqueras, before moving to those who were outside of Spain and facing charges of rebellion, including Puigdemont.

Conde-Pumpido noted that once the Constitutional Court establishes a binding interpretation of the law, the Supreme Court may be able to apply it directly. If the Supreme Court does not implement the law despite a favorable doctrine from the Constitutional Court, the latter will be required to issue individual rulings on each case in the following months.
