Constitutional Court rules on Gibran Rakabuming Raka's education dispute
The Indonesian Constitutional Court has issued a ruling on a legal challenge regarding Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s educational credentials. The court found that no convincing evidence or valid diplomas were presented to prove that Gibran completed a high school education or its equivalent from an overseas institution.
Judges noted that the documents submitted, specifically a ‘certificate of attendance,’ only serve as proof of participation in a learning process rather than a formal certificate of graduation or a diploma. Consequently, the court stated these documents do not meet the legal standards for educational equivalency required by election law.
Despite these findings, the Constitutional Court ruled that it could not disqualify Gibran from his position as Vice President. The court determined that the petitioners, including Denny Indrayana and various civil organizations, lacked the legal standing to bring the dispute. Furthermore, the court noted that Gibran’s status as a candidate had effectively ended upon his inauguration in October 2024, making the challenge substantively moot in the current legal framework.
