Constitutional Courts issue rulings in Dominican Republic and Ecuador

The Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic has declared inadmissible a legal challenge brought by the grandchildren of former dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The claimants sought the return of funds deposited in Banreservas during the Trujillo dictatorship, which were intended for their late mother, Lina Altagracia Lovatón Pittaluga. The court ruled that the appeal failed to meet the essential requirement of constitutional relevance. Previous rulings had already declared the demand inadmissible due to prescription, noting that the funds in question had been withdrawn prior to Trujillo's death in 1961.

In Ecuador, the Constitutional Court has rejected seven unconstitutionality actions aimed at overturning the decision to advance sectional elections. This ruling confirms that local elections and the selection of members for the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) will take place on November 29, 2026, rather than the originally projected date of February 14, 2027. The National Electoral Council (CNE) moved the date forward based on technical reports warning that El Niño weather phenomena could disrupt logistics and mobility during the early months of 2027.
