Constitutional Democratic Party delays merger talks with Komeito and Centrist Reform Union

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) is adjusting its plans to postpone a planned merger with the Centrist Reform Union and Komeito, originally targeted for the end of August. This shift follows internal resistance, particularly from local party members and representatives who have expressed caution regarding the unification.

A recent Kyodo News poll indicates significant public skepticism toward the merger. When asked about the future of the three parties, 51.0% of respondents stated that the parties should “return to their original forms” (the previous CDP and Komeito), rather than merging into a single entity. Only 19.0% supported a full merger into one party.

While Komeito and the Centrist Reform Union have shown a more positive stance toward the merger, the CDP leadership is emphasizing a “bottom-up” approach by gathering opinions from local organizations and party members. The CDP leadership is expected to communicate its current stance during an upcoming meeting between the leaders of the three parties.
