Constitutional Tribunal President seeks budget funding support
Bogdan Święczkowski, President of the Constitutional Tribunal, has formally appealed to the Social Dialogue Council (RDS) for support in securing funding for the Tribunal in the 2027 state budget. The move follows the government's budget draft, which omitted provisions for the Tribunal's financing.
Święczkowski submitted a budget project for 2027 totaling 78.05 million PLN to the RDS. In a letter addressed to RDS Chairman Jan Klimka and Vice-Chairman Piotr Duda, Święczkowski argued that a constitutional body cannot be entirely omitted from the budget. He emphasized that regardless of disputes regarding the Tribunal's composition or rulings, the budget should not be used as an instrument to prevent the functioning of a constitutionally established organ.
He further noted that evaluating the Tribunal's performance and ensuring its basic financial resources are separate issues, particularly concerning the constitutional principle of judicial independence from other branches of power. The current budget draft lacks the necessary planning documents from the Ministry of Finance to include the Tribunal's requirements.
