Construction and cement sectors face decarbonization challenges
A study by Deerns and reports from Federbeton highlight the environmental impact of the construction and cement industries. According to the UNEP Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction, the sector is responsible for 37% of global CO2 emissions and nearly half of global material extraction.
Research by Deerns indicates that construction site activities generate approximately 11.30 kg of CO2 equivalent per square meter, significantly exceeding the 6.95 kg produced by material transport. Electricity consumption for machinery, lighting, and support systems accounts for nearly half of these operational emissions.
In the cement and concrete sector, Federbeton reports progress toward European climate neutrality goals. The industry aims for a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, though Federbeton President Stefano Gallini notes this will require investments exceeding 5 billion euros and annual operating costs over 1 billion euros.
Recent data shows improvements in circular economy practices, including the recovery of 2.6 million tons of alternative materials in cement production. Additionally, the industry is seeing a reduction in clinker use and an increase in the use of renewable energy and biomass to replace fossil fuels.
