Construction begins on Kadıköy Rıhtım Camii complex in Istanbul
The first pile was driven to launch construction of the Kadıköy Rıhtım Camii on Istanbul’s Kadıköy waterfront. Association president Erol Kaya marked the ceremony with a "Bismillah" declaration and noted that the project follows years of planning and legal approvals.
The mosque will feature a 25‑metre‑diameter main dome rising 44.5 metres, and four minarets—two three‑tier towers at 90.85 metres and two two‑tier towers at 78.12 metres. The worship space is designed for 7,000 congregants and will be served by a 750‑vehicle underground garage and a 300‑vehicle open‑air lot.
Beyond the prayer hall, the complex will house a library, art workshops, conference rooms, a soup kitchen, a mourning house, and a Quran school for children aged 4‑6. The design emphasizes modern engineering, including self‑generated power, rain‑water harvesting, and seismic reinforcement using roughly 2,100 piles and about 6,000 jet‑grout injections. The construction schedule is projected at three years.
The build proceeds amid ongoing legal disputes; critics, including the Architects’ Chamber and the Kadıköy mayor, have warned of environmental and heritage impacts. Nevertheless, machinery entered the site on the night of 18 June before the court’s decision, signalling the project's advance despite the pending case.
