Construction collapse in São José de Ribamar kills one worker

A construction collapse at the Residencial Turiúba site in São José de Ribamar, Maranhão, resulted in the death of one worker and injured another on Monday, May 5. The deceased has been identified as Marcos Vinícios da Conceição Silva.

The accident occurred on Rua Gilbert Caires at a site managed by the construction company Canopus. According to the Maranhão Military Fire Department (CBMMA), workers were performing routine activities when the structure collapsed. Video footage showed colleagues attempting an improvised rescue of the survivor, who was trapped under soil, before firefighters arrived.

The Maranhão Civil Police are currently treating the incident as an accidental death, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes and potential structural or safety failures. The CBMMA's Technical Activities Department has been deployed to evaluate the remaining structure's stability. Canopus issued a statement expressing solidarity with the victim's family and stating they are providing support.
