Construction innovation and material risks highlighted in Germany

New research and industry forums in Germany are highlighting the intersection of construction innovation and risk management. The VHV Building Damage Report 2025/26, produced by VHV Allgemeine Versicherung AG in collaboration with the Institute for Building Research (IFB), analyzes over 130,000 anonymized insurance datasets from 2020 to 2024. The report focuses on how new, innovative building materials can lead to unexpected damage risks when applied in real-world construction sites.

In a separate development, the Forum Baubestand 2026 showcased the practical application of carbon concrete for the renovation of existing structures. A notable example is the renovation of the historic Hyparschale in Magdeburg, which utilized carbon concrete to preserve its architectural form while meeting modern technical requirements. This project was recognized with the Ernst & Sohn Engineering Prize for its integration of monument preservation and engineering innovation.
