Construction sector in Brazil faces mixed outlook amid new Rio event
The construction sector in Rio de Janeiro is highlighted by the launch of Feicon Rio, an event organized by RX designed to connect industry, distributors, builders, and retailers. According to Firjan, the state's construction market moves approximately R$ 25 billion annually and is projected to see R$ 41 billion in infrastructure investments in the short term. The sector accounts for about 2.4% of Rio de Janeiro's economy and generates roughly 220,000 formal jobs.
However, broader trends in the Brazilian construction industry suggest a potential deceleration. While the sector added over 20,000 jobs in August, factors such as rising interest rates, increased household debt, and rising construction costs—with the INCC-M rising 6.61% over 12 months—are creating headwinds. Additionally, the FGV Ibre Construction Sector Confidence Index fell to 90.5 points in September, signaling moderate pessimism among business owners regarding future demand and employment expansion.
