Construction starts at Coventry GreenPower Park, a £2.5bn clean‑energy hub

Enabling works have begun at GreenPower Park on the former Coventry Airport site, turning the 308‑acre area into a major battery manufacturing and clean‑energy hub. The public‑private partnership between Coventry City Council and Rigby Group has secured planning permission for up to 5.7 million sq ft of industrial development, aiming to create thousands of jobs and inject an estimated £2.5 billion into the local economy.

Matrix Networks and Ashwell Construction are installing a new primary sub‑station, funded with £23 million from Mayor Richard Parker and the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Investment Zone programme. Archaeological and environmental surveys are underway, with investigations expected to finish in November before ground works proceed. Demolition of redundant airport buildings is contracted, with completion targeted for Q3 2027.

Project director Mike Murray said the site is “poised to plug in to the National Grid” and could host a new manufacturing facility within 18 months of an occupier signing. Mayor Parker called the spade‑in‑the‑ground a “significant milestone” for the region.
