Construction Worker Killed in Sesto Fiorentino Site Sparks Safety Outcry

A 48‑year‑old construction worker died on the morning of 30 April after being struck by a machine at a building site on Via Lucchese in Sesto Fiorentino, province of Florence. Emergency services responded with a red‑code ambulance, but the worker succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to hospital. Police scientific units, the mobile squad and PISS L (prevention, hygiene and safety) officers of the ASL Toscana Centro were dispatched to reconstruct the accident and verify compliance with safety regulations.

The death coincided with a regional industrial strike, prompting unions—including CGIL, CISL and UIL—to voice condolences and demand stronger preventative measures, increased inspections, training and investments in equipment maintenance. Union leaders called for a dedicated regional safety table and even suggested criminal liability for violations. Regional authorities, including Mayor Damiano Sforzi, Labour Assessor Irene Falchini and President of Tuscany Eugenio Giani, expressed mourning and urged a rapid, transparent investigation to prevent further tragedies.
