Construction workers in Puno demand holiday recognition and better conditions
In Peru, October 25 marks the Day of Civil Construction Workers, a date intended to recognize the contributions of laborers to national development.
In the Puno region, worker Giancarlo Rodríguez has called upon the regional governor and the provincial mayor to issue a resolution recognizing Monday, October 26, as a compensatory day off, as the official date falls on a Sunday.
Rodríguez also raised concerns regarding alleged irregularities in the distribution of work equipment and noted that wages in Puno appear lower than those in neighboring regions such as Arequipa, Tacna, Moquegua, and Cusco. He estimated that between 7,000 and 10,000 construction workers operate within the Puno region and expressed dissatisfaction with current union representation.
