Consuelo Araújo Noguera championed Colombian vallenato music

Consuelo Araújo Noguera, known as ‘La Cacica’, was a prominent Colombian journalist, writer, and cultural manager who played a fundamental role in elevating vallenato music to a national and international symbol of identity.

Born in Valledupar on August 1, 1940, she was a driving force behind the creation of the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in 1968, working alongside figures such as Rafael Escalona and Alfonso López Michelsen. Her efforts helped transform vallenato from a regional musical expression into a recognized cultural heritage of Colombia.
