Consultant doctors in England announce two-day strike for November
Senior doctors in England, represented by the British Medical Association (BMA), have announced plans to strike for two days on November 25 and 26. The walkout is driven by ongoing disputes regarding pay, pensions, workload, and physician wellbeing.
BMA consultants committee co-chairs Dr. Helen Neary and Dr. Shanu Datta stated that while they have engaged in negotiations in good faith, ministers have failed to address critical issues, effectively “kicking the can down the road.” The union expressed concern that the government is ignoring the pressures facing the NHS and suggesting pay cuts at a time when progress on waiting lists has stalled.
Health Secretary Yvette Cooper described the announcement as “very disappointing,” noting that the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England have been in constructive discussions. She cautioned that industrial action during the winter preparation period would be “irresponsible.”
During the strike, consultants will provide emergency cover only, similar to hospital staffing arrangements on Christmas Day.
