Consumer Advice on Housesitting Insurance in Germany

The German consumer protection agency Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen advises anyone planning to house‑sit to first contact their private liability insurer and confirm what coverage applies both domestically and abroad. House‑sitting involves staying in a host’s home and performing tasks such as pet care or garden maintenance in exchange for free accommodation. Platforms that arrange house‑sitting charge membership fees that can range from €25 to over €200 per year. The agency recommends that agreements with hosts be put in writing, specifying the exact duties, any restrictions, and whether the host’s vehicle insurance applies. Hosts may waive or limit liability for damages, but a private liability policy held by the house‑sitter can protect against accidental damage to third parties. Because unpaid house‑sitting is usually classified as a favor or friendship service, many private liability policies do not automatically cover it, making prior clarification essential.
