Consumer advice on video game purchases and in-game costs
Consumer protection experts are warning about the financial risks associated with modern video games, particularly those using 'free-to-play' models. Digital expert Erol Burak Tergek of Verbraucherzentrale NRW notes that games like 'EA Sports FC', 'Clash of Clans', and 'Fortnite' utilize in-game purchases for extra content, higher levels, or rare equipment. These costs can accumulate rapidly, posing a significant risk to children and adolescents who may be misled by psychological triggers.
Common tactics include 'dark patterns'—design elements like pop-ups, prominent shop symbols, or arrows intended to influence purchasing decisions. The use of virtual currencies, such as coins or diamonds, further obscures the actual amount of real money being spent. Additionally, time-limited offers and countdown timers create artificial urgency to pressure players into making quick decisions.
To mitigate these risks, experts recommend using protected child accounts with purchase restrictions or passwords on consoles and computers. When purchasing PC games, consumers are also advised to carefully verify the specific edition, platform, region, and language options before comparing prices to ensure compatibility and avoid unnecessary expenditures.
