Consumer Affairs Authority conducts 144 inspections on plastic bottles
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) conducted 144 islandwide inspections last week targeting reusable plastic drinking bottles and polymer-based baby feeding bottles. During these raids, more than 1,400 items were seized as case productions.
The inspections focused on compliance with specific standards: SLS 1616 for reusable plastic bottles and SLS 1306 for polymer feeding bottles. Under current regulations, locally manufactured products must bear the SLS Product Certification Mark issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). While imported products do not require the SLS mark, they must be approved under the SLSI Import Inspection Scheme.
CAA officers examined invoices and supply information to trace products through the supply chain, from retailers to manufacturers or importers. The authority advised consumers to verify product information and retain receipts, while reminding traders to ensure all legal and standard requirements are met before marketing products.
